About Dr. Jiyeon Hwang
Dr. Jiyeon Hwang is a Korean lyric coloratura soprano known for her distinctive vocal range and bright, sweet timbre. She has performed extensively in operatic roles, recitals, and concerts across the United States, Italy, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. Dr. Hwang received her Bachelor’s degree from Chung-Ang University in Korea with a full scholarship (Top Student) and her Master’s of Music Degree in Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2015. She completed her Doctoral Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Minnesota, where she received the Harvey V. Berneking Opera Fellowship. Currently, Dr. Hwang is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Choir at Texas A&M International University, where she leads the voice and choir programs and teaches Applied Voice, Song Literature, Voice Methods, Opera Workshop, and Choir. Recently, she gave a masterclass at Chung-Ang University.
Dr. Hwang was chosen as the representative singer by the North Central Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing(NATS) to compete in the Artist Auditions in January 2022 in New York and won a William Vernad award from NATSAA (National Round). She received the Gold Award from the Forte International Vocal Competition and won Third Prize at the 2021 San Francisco International Innovative Competition. She also debuted at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2022. Her achievement includes First Prize in the Kenwood symphony orchestra competition and Second Prize in the NATS competition(2019). During the pandemic, she pioneered a new genre of virtual opera, ‘Webpera’ (Web + Opera), with the worldwide premiere of L’elisir D’amore in collaboration with Camerata New Jersey. Also, she was cast as Berta from the Opera “The Barber of Seville '' with the Cleveland Opera Theatre in 2020. Operatic roles she has performed include Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Lisette (La Rondine), Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Anna Gomez (The Consul), Miss Titmouse (Too Many Sopranos), Papagena (The Magic Flute), Carollina (Il Matrimonio Segreto), and Lakmé (Lakmé).
